Write for us
Southern Music Culture welcomes considered pitches about music across the South. Send proposals through the Contact page and tell us the question your piece will answer, the reader it is for and why the subject benefits from a focused article.
What we welcome
We are interested in pitches about musical traditions, instruments, song forms, performance settings and ways of listening. A strong proposal has a defined subject rather than a broad survey, and offers a reader a concrete way to understand or notice something. Comparative pieces should explain what is being compared and why the distinction matters.
A useful pitch
Include a working title, a short summary, the main points you would cover and the material you expect to consult. Flag any uncertainty, limitations or relevant perspective that affects the scope. Avoid pitches built on unsupported claims, promotional copy, or a claim to represent an entire region or tradition.
Before sending
Proposals are sent through the Contact page. Please include enough detail for an editorial review, but do not send a complete article unless it has been requested. A pitch is not a promise of publication, and acceptance depends on fit, clarity and the material available to support the piece.
A song makes more sense in context
We connect what you hear to how a piece is shaped, played and shared. The aim is not to flatten different traditions into one Southern sound.
